What is a science job?

The sciences are an exciting area for candidates, offering great career prospects and the chance to make an impact on our daily lives. New technologies, manufacturing methods and research make a scientific career a great path to choose.

Science jobs are scientific roles within organisations in the commercial and public sectors such as pharmaceutical companies, consumer product manufacturers and government departments. Jobs can range from entry-level positions such as a Laboratory Assistant to board level positions such as Chief Scientist. Salaries vary from position to position and will depend on the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

Responsibilities for science jobs vary according to the role. While many are hands-on positions, requiring a certain amount of involvement in the laboratory or in the field, non science skills such as admin duties are often part of the job. Scientists and technicians may find themselves inputting results onto a database or creating reports for a senior staff member. There may also be meetings and presentations with clients and department representatives. Senior positions may involve business and management skills. They might be responsible for managing a team of technicians or a product development team. Science jobs differ from other types of jobs, however, since there is an emphasis on applying scientific knowledge and skills to the role.

What degree do I need to find a scientific job?

Scientific careers can be incredibly rewarding, with a wide variety of roles on offer for suitable candidates. A range of companies, some of them household names such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Kraft Foods, employ tens of thousands (if not more) in roles across their organisations, including research and development, manufacturing and commercial functions such as product information and marketing. The public and charitable sectors have a range of roles for graduates.

The degree needed for scientific jobs varies from position to position. Some roles require a specific scientific degree e.g. biochemistry for immunologist jobs, while others might accept a wide variety of science degrees from different disciplines. Graduate and NHS schemes will also have their own specific requirements; candidates should check them carefully. Bear in mind that some careers are directly related to the degree e.g. pharmacologist and soil scientist for biology degrees, analytical chemist and forensic scientist for chemistry degrees and medical physicist for a physics degree.

The skills and knowledge gained from the degree are what the employer is looking for. Some scientific careers can also be started with a nursing degree, too. Work experience is also invaluable for graduates looking for a scientific job – especially if it from a specific field they wish to enter.
