Science Job Fairs

Are they useful?

Science job fairs – how helpful are they?

If you've not been job-hunting for some time, or are newly qualified, you may not have experienced one of the strongest growing trends: job fairs.

Popular in both the field of science and other industries, they offer a one stop shop for prospective candidates to view multiple employers and agencies under one roof.

But are they are helpful as they sound? Or is attending a waste of time that would be better used by searching online.

Here are some facts to consider about science job fairs.

Draws together specific resources

Although science is an industry which is enjoying significant growth and sustained investment, finding employers is not as easy compared to other sectors.

Science job fairs can be great.

A highly skilled field, science jobs are not as plentiful as others, and there are only a select handful of employers who have vacancies. This can make job hunting arduous and hard work (although it can be made easier by signing up with a dedicated scientific recruitment firm).

A science job fair provides candidates with the opportunity to look for work in the same way as a mainstream job-hunter would. With a multitude of employers all under one roof, candidates can compare opportunities, and speak to prospective employers and recruitment agencies without having to spend hours searching between each one.

Gathering information

As an external candidate, it can sometimes be difficult to get a real idea of what a company is like simply based on their job advert.

Speaking to individuals from the company can provide a much better idea about their values, ethics and principles and provide much more insight about what it might be like to work for them.

Job fairs are also a great way to find out more about the company, opportunities within and how progression, training and development are handled without the pressure of a formal interview. A more relaxed conversation can be the perfect way for you to determine whether the company is the kind of place you would want to work, and whether it's the right match for you.

This is not something which should ever by under-estimated; the scientific industry doesn't just provide jobs, it offers careers which is an entirely different prospect.

People remember others they have met, even if they are simply candidates passing by their stand at a job fair. It's an opportunity to talk to people you may otherwise not have access to, forging relationships which may be useful in the future, either before or after you have secured your next job.

Gaining an understanding

If you are weighing up a move into a different industry or career – and science offers almost unlimited options! - It can be difficult to know exactly what's involved.

A science jobs fair provides the chance to talk to professionals who work in the field you are interested in, so you can ask the questions you want.

This can be a good way to help narrow down your career choices and determine exactly what type of job you want. Recruitment consultants are also a great mine of information and can provide you with a wealth of experience to help you pick the right direction for you.

Science job fairs are great experiences.

Valuable experience

If you haven't attended many interviews, the process of speaking to senior scientists and others from the industry can be somewhat daunting.

A job fair is a great practice run. The chance to try out your interview skills and gain confidence by approaching potential employers, a science job fair provide valuable experience which could well help you be more successful in securing a job in the long run.
